Where can I get a programming manual for a Meridian by BT (Nortel BCM 400) small office PBX phone system?

A) Navigate your way through www.nortel.com, all the documentation is there. Such a helpful company....

what is the power usage of a meridian norstar phone system?

Q) this is a small office system with only 4 lines and 2 handsets I need to provide a power invertor for use in power cuts. They range in size from 100 watts - 1000 watts

A) Actually you may be better off using a UPS rather than an inverter. I previously used a 1000VA APC UPS and I remember that the runtime on it while on battery power was well over 12 hours. Furthermore, this will help prevent dropped calls and the wait time for the system to reboot while transferring from utility power to battery power.

Salary Expectations?

Q) Hi, I am due to enter negotiations regarding my salary. I have around 8 years experience in IT from a career point of view, and have trained towards an MCSA (waiting for exams). I am looking after 14 servers in 3 locations. We are opening another office down south which I will be expected to support The servers include 4 DC'c, 2 Exchange servers, 1 SQL Server, File Servers, FTP Servers; as well as the company phone system, copiers, software licencing and 3 netscreens and 1 WiFi bridge and to support approx 45 staff I am also expected to source new technology like media players, etc for the work the company actually does. We are increasing the servers to around 20 in the next fews months as well implementing company wide VoIP technology and better WAN comms. What I need to know is should I be asking for more than the £25,000 plus car I am currently on? My TItle is IT Manager and I am in the East Midlands area Cheers

A) I assume this is a job move - in which case you should always look to improve your financial situation, otherwise what's the point. I'd ask for slightly more, explaining that you'll only move jobs if there's a rise in it for you. Maybe £28,500, settle on £27k? Personally, that's already double what I'm on, and I work my socks off. Makes me sick it does :)

My TItle is IT Manager and I am in the East Midlands area Cheers Incedently I did study and gain a Computer Science HND (Could not afford the extra two years!!) I consider the title more Management of IT rather than "IT Manager", but I do attend the main management meetings, and am considered a senior member of staff. I only ask the question after a conversation I had with someone who said that people he had intervoed and knew in my area, and in similar sized businesses were earning better packages than me. It is sometimes difficult to measure yourself against the industry standard when working for an SME as you are expected to wear so many hats. In repsonse to some of the questions, yes I do support all the Server applications, although I do require more specialised support for SQL. I also do basic front line support for the end user applications like 3D max, Microstation and Solidworks.

A) I would think so .... I think your salary would be more than that in Canada for a similar job, and I thought salaries were higher in the UK than here since your cost of living is so much higher. Best of luck.

What office phone system do I have and how do I update it?

Q) My two-employee (with an occasional intern) office has a very old phone system, one with probably more features than we need. We have four lines coming in. A few weeks ago, something strange happened to the phones, making them not work the same way they used to. Since this system is so old, we do not have any of the telephone or system manuals and don't know how to fix it. We may need new phones or an entire new system. The current phone seems to be a PBX system. The cabinet and three phones are all Fujitsu. I guess my question is can I just buy new 4-line phones (nice and cheap) and us them with the current cabinet, or do I also need a new cabinet (not so cheap)? Our office would probably be fine with a key-less system, just using the phones, but I imagine that would involve a removal of the current cabinet, which would also require professional installation (un-installation) services. Any ideas are appreciated. We are looking for the most cost-effective option. Thanks.

A) with only 4 lines you should do fine with the 4 line small business "system" phones offered by at&t and several other companies... the phones are less then $200 each... they have most of same features that you are used to.. the cabnet can be removed or bypassed.. but the jacks will need to be rewired... but this is fairly simple (so long as each jack has at least 4 pair wire going to it) if each jack has 4 pair wire going to it, you can pretty much rewire this yourself... at the cabnet, when you remove the CO lines from the system, you want to connect line 1 to the blue white of the station wires, line 2 to the orange white of the station wires, line 3 to the green/white of the station wires, and line 4 to the brown.white of the station wires... now at each station, or phone jack that you have existing, you will need to add a second jack... jack 1, the existing (or you can replace it if you like) will have blue/white going to green/red, and orange/white going to yellow/black... jack 2 will have green/white going to green/red, and brown/white going to yellow black... even if you hire someone to rewire, it will most likely be cheaper then replacing the system... unless you want on hold music, or have on site voice mail... i think this is the way to go..

Office phone system with 35 lines?

Q) I am very confused on how this works. I am looking to start a business in sales. I want to set up about 35 lines with different phone numbers or extensions. I would like something that would be unlimited, that way I would have similar monthly charges. What is the best way to go about this? Would it be good to go with those digital phones, which connect to internet lines and offer unlimited national calling for about $50 a line? any help would be greatly appreciated as I am lost. Thanks in advance

A) I'd suggest that you call Vonage, Verizon (or whoever your local phone company is), and a few others and ask to speak to someone in business sales. Explain what you want to do. Ask them to recommend an approach to your situation and get a price quote. Even if one comes in low, look at the approach they recommend. Does it expand if you need it? And up-time guarantee? Stuff like that. If they won't talk to you, then cross them off your list.

our office phone system has many extensions, can you find out who within your office is checking your voicemai

Q) someone within my office checked my voicemail, is there a way to find out who it is!

A) chances are, probably not. if you suspect you know whom it was, report it to your supervisor. changing your password would also be a good idea.

I need help from someone who knows a lot about setting up a computerized office phone system (music on hold)?

Q) Hi. I want to make this myself, because i like making things myself. Plus, i don't want to spend any money, because I like making things myself without spending money. Its ok if they get a little ghetto because that makes it more fun :) So, what I want is to be able to have my land line phones (2 lines) to be connected to a computer which will run scripts that handle incoming calls. I want there to be music on hold when i put them on hold, and I want to be able to transfer the calls and stuff like that. My question is: Will a phone modem card work to plug the phone line into my computer?? Like is there software that can use a modem??

A) go to this website!! http://www.hellodirect.com/hellodirect/Shop?PCR=1:1:5:15 yes, you need a phone-modem!! then you will have to download the software, and its a one time charge.....30 to 40 dollars....

I need an office phone system and have no idea where to start.?

Q) I intend to set up 6 desks and everyone should be able to call out at once.

A) call your phone company they will help you. there are companies that specialize in this field.

What is the best way to set up a remote phone extension that ties with an existing small office phone system?

A) i believe that you would be able to do this with CENTREX... thats the phone lines where you need to dial 9 to get an outside line... i believe that you can have an "extention" at a diffrent location then the rest of your phone lines... contact your local phone carrier to discuss the options available for you

Where can I get an office/business phone system that is stylish (modern i.e., Bang & Olufsen, etc..)?

Q) Trying to find this out - right now all I can find are traditional business phone systems.

A) Try their web site. I would recomend the Beocom 1 with table charger and a BeoLine. You can put up to 8 phones per Beoline, it doesn't matter if they are BeoCom1 or BeoCom2. The BeoCom 2 may be stylish, but you have to get used to its buttons.

Best cordless phone system for office?

Q) Okay, so since I'm finding phones with good reviews in some places, not so good in others (basically a mix all across the board) I'm not sure quite what to get or where to find info and look. We need a 5.8 GHz cordless phone, multiple lines is NOT a necessity, with caller ID, and a good battery life (9 hours min) and good range. The one complaint from different people on different phones seems to be the range - for some reason I've come across two different reviews for phones that state something along the lines that the phone has only a 15 yard range (and mind you these reviews come from different people and are almost the only bad review to the good ones). Suggestions/thoughts/opinions?

A) Hi, Chris here from http://www.CompuTelCo.com/ the NEC DSX Telephone System source. We don't sell these, but Hellodirect.com does and they have a great tutorial for this posted at: http://telecom.hellodirect.com/docs/Tutorials/5.8GHzFrequency.1.031903.asp 5.8 GHz phones definately have more range than 15 yards! A lot of this will depend on what the walls are made of, etc. The tutorial posted above will help give you an idea of what you can expect. Make sure you check out the "Bottom Line" section. A side note: You should definately avoid 2.4GHz phones especially if you have a wireless network. They can cause problems with eachother. Our bottom line advice: If you can avoid the cordless phone, avoid it. If you cannot, you're going the right direction with 5.8GHz. If you spend more than $150 for it, you can be sure you're getting a good phone. Personally, we like Panasonic then Uniden. Vtech has some nice economy models too. If you buy it from someplace with a return policy, you can't go wrong!

What's the advantage of using T1 over the regular Verizon phone system in an office?

Q) We have an issue of static with the Verizon system in our small office. A different line every time; can't pinpoint when, where or why it will happen. Verizon and our PBX manufacturer just point fingers at each other, w/no solution so far. Swapped out all of our PBX equipment a while back, so I think it's Verizon. Someone suggested going to a T1 for the phones -- we already have one for data -- to circumvent Verizon. Need to know what the possible risks are. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

A) No clue,thanks for the 2!
